Biography
Frederik Svane was born on January 21, 2004, in Lübeck, Germany, though his family has Danish roots—his father, Troels Svane, is a distinguished Danish cellist, and Frederik himself speaks Danish as his first language alongside German. Growing up in a culturally rich household, Frederik was exposed to chess early through his older brother, Rasmus Svane, a Grandmaster born in 1997. Frederik began playing at age four, joining a chess club and learning by observing and competing against Rasmus. This sibling rivalry fostered his passion and talent for the game. The Svane brothers, both GMs, represent a rare and notable chess family, with Frederik also playing the cello, reflecting his father’s musical influence.
Frederik spent his formative years in Lübeck, where he pursued both chess and education. Frederik currently plays for the Hamburger SK in the Bundesliga, continuing the family’s strong ties to Hamburg’s chess community. His career reflects a blend of natural talent, familial support, and dedication to the game.
