Nikolas Theodorou was born in Athens but moved with his family to Atsipopoulo in Rethymno, Crete, in 2006 due to business reasons. He grew up in Rethymno, completing his elementary education there before attending the Experimental High School of Rethymnon, where he graduated in 2018 as an outstanding student. His academic prowess continued as he pursued higher education in the United States at Saint Louis University (SLU), a hub for collegiate chess. In May 2022, he earned a bachelor’s degree with a double major in Physics and Mathematics. Following this, he began postgraduate studies in Biostatistics & Health Analytics at SLU in August 2022, supported by a full scholarship that also allowed him to continue competing with the university’s chess team.

Theodorou’s chess journey began early, with lessons starting in 2007 at the Chess Club of Rethymno. By 2015, he had joined the Chania Chess Academy, which provided greater resources to nurture his growing talent. His relocation to the U.S. for studies further aligned with his chess career, as Saint Louis is renowned for its strong chess culture.
