The founder of the Swiss Chess section of the ACCENTUS Foundation William Wirth made the first symbolic move in the game of Magnus Carlsen against David Navara. He has been a well-known figure in the chess world for the past 40 years, and his experienced hand brought luck to the Norwegian champion. Carlsen gave up his queen on move 16, obtaining rook, piece and pawn in return. Most importantly, he gained control of the centre and slowly outplayed his opponent. The Czech grandmaster could have defended more stubbornly in the endgame, but the position was definitely difficult to play. Other winner of round 1, Shakhryiar Mamedyarov did not experience too many difficulties against Nico Georgiadis. The Swiss representative played a bad move after white’s novelty and his position immediately became critical. The 3rd game of the day was a very balanced affair. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave did not get anything tangible from the opening against Peter Svidler and had to content himself with a draw.
