Keymer strikes back

Today offered exciting chess at the Biel Chess Festival: Vincent Keymer played big against Arkadij Naiditsch and took over the top of the tournament again with his victory. David Antón Guijarro could finally book his first victory. And Noël Studer from Berne played strongly with Black against Pentala Harikrishna. The resulting draw was probably only moderately satisfactory, but he surely gained in self-confidence today.

After his defeat yesterday, Vincent Keymer has made an impressive comeback today. In a brilliant game, he gave the former German number one, Arkadij Naiditsch, no chance. After only 28 moves, his victory was certain, with which he once again takes the lead in the Biel Triathlon Grand Master Tournament. Obviously, the 15-year-old German was able to make good use of his time at home during the pandemic: Less school and more chess, as he impishly admitted after the game. He had worked especially on his openings during the last months, he told WGM Dina Belenkaya in the interview after the game.

Missed opportunity for Studer

Pentala Harikrishna and Noël Studer delivered an exciting and long game today. The local player made a strong appearance with the black pieces, putting the top-placed Indian under a lot of pressure at times. Studer, however, was unable to use his advantage and the game ended in a draw with a quiet disappointment for him.

The game between Radoslaw Wojtaszek and Mickey Adams also ended in a draw. This, however, happened relatively quickly and in a much less spectacular way. With this result, the two could consolidate their second and third places in the tournament ranking. Adams in particular seems to like the classic games, he has already won seven points, only Keymer with his eight is ahead of him in this ranking.

Relief for Antón Guijarro

Today, on day four, David Antón Guijarro finally recorded his first victory. After disappointing performances so far, he was able to force Romain Édouard into a rook final today with black, which the Frenchman had to give up. After the game, the Spaniard revealed that he had not trained as intensively in the last few months and that it was only the invitation to the Biel Chess Festival that motivated him to do so again.

Open tournament: team tournament

As in the last two years, a team competition is held at this year's open tournament. Three participants can join together to form a team. With eight registered teams, the organizers can announce a new high. After four rounds, the teams "Team 150" (10 points), "SC Zitadelle Spandau" (9½ points) and "Charmois" (9½ points) are delivering a close race to the top.
