In the duel between the two grandmasters playing for Switzerland (Sebastian Bogner made the change of nation from Germany to Switzerland in 2013), there was a final with two minor pieces each after an exchange of the major pieces. With an equal distribution of the pawn structure there were no further dynamics and shortly after the 40th move a draw was agreed after a triple repetition of the position. This is important to mention, as draw offers before the 40th move are not allowed at the Grand Master Tournament in Biel.
The biggest surprise of the day is surely the victory of the 14-year-old Grand Master Nodirbek Abdusattorov from Uzbekistan against the number 1 of the tournament Sam Shankland from the United States. Abdusattorov is currently the second youngest player to receive the grandmaster's rating. In today's game of the Spanish opening, Shankland was able to win a pawn in the middlegame, but only because two white connected pawns were put in the center. One of these two pawns also decided the game, because he could run through up to d7 and with the support of the other white piece he could only be stopped with great loss of material. With this victory against a player with more than 2700 Elo, the young Uzbek takes another step to cross the borders of 2600 Elo. Before the tournament he was still missing two Elopoints.
In the match between the Iranian Grandmaster Parham Maghsoodloo and his Peruvian opponent GM Jorge Cori there was soon an interesting material distribution with two minor pieces against a queen. The initiative of the two pieces was not enough to resist the force of the black major pieces and after the 24th move of Black and an upcoming transformation of a pawn to a second queen the victory of Black became reality.
The last game of today was between the Indian Grandmaster Santosh Vidit and the Hungarian Grandmaster Peter Leko, a current player with over 2700 Elo and a former player (best score 2763 in 2005). Vidit overplayed his opponent in the symmetric version of the English opening and was able to win a second pawn after the 40th move with a nice tactical insert using two consecutive knight forks.
In the table, the two defeats of the leaders resulted in a change of leader: Vidit took the lead by one point ahead of Shankland.
In the parallel running MTO 5 players still have the maximum of three points. At the top is the American grandmaster Gata Kamsky, former challenger of Anatoly Karpov in the 1996 World Championship.
